Frequently Asked Questions
How does an oil boiler work?

Oil Boilers work similar to gas boilers with some slight differences. Firstly, oil is drawn from a storage tank via a pump into the burner inside the boiler. Secondly, The oil is pressurized to a high pressure and ejected from a nozzle that atomizes the fuel. The fuel is then ignited inside a combustion chamber and the exhaust gases are expelled through a heat exchanger, heating the water that lies in the water jacket around the heat exchanger, and finally out of the flue terminal into open air. The heated water is then pumped around the heating system and returns back to the boiler cooler than when it left to be reheated.

As a general rule you could count the number of radiators on your system allowing 1.5kw per radiator and then add 3kw for a hot water cylinder for example, however it is best to consult a heating engineer like myself to carry out a whole house survey. We will also look at the insulation properties of the home and take into consideration how much heat the property is likely to loose over a period of time and also consider any upgrades to the property you may be likely to undertake in the future.

Boilers should be replaced when you start to find issues with them. This could be anything from frequent breakdowns or odd smells, to low performance or leaks. It’s usually easier to get the work carried out in summer because boiler engineers are less busy at that time of the year. And you won’t be cold while your new boiler is being installed.
