Getting a chimney sweep done is the most important step to ensure a safer chimney. Sweeping a chimney and
maintained every year reduces the risk of blockages, carbon monoxide poisoning and chimney
fires which ultimately can be fatal.
Hiring a chimney sweeper also ensures that your appliance wether it’s solid fuel, oil or gas is running efficient
saving you money in the long term.
After all, the main reason for having a fireplace is to enjoy the heat, keep warm and give yourself a cozy spot for the family.
No one wants to make an insurance claim for a fire breakout. However, prevention is better than cure - so ensuring your chimney is well swept on a yearly basis shows your insurance company that:
a. Your chimney has been maintained by a certified installer and sweep
b. You are actively mitigating risk in your home
Peace of mind always wins.
Upon arrival there should be clear access to the fireplace or boiler to be services and an area of at least 6ft square if possible in front of the appliance to lay tools and carry out the sweep.
We also ask that all ornaments/valuables are removed from the hearth area and mantel pieces so we can attach our special sheets to seal the fireplace/stove opening.
After the sweeping has been carried out, advice will be given if needed on how to burn better and get the most out of your appliance.
A smoke test of every appliance/flue swept is also carried out to ensure that there is sufficient draught and air permeability into the room serving that appliance. We will ask that all doors and windows are shut whilst this is carried out. This test also ensures no products of combustion will spill out into the room which ultimately could pose a carbon monoxide risk if they did.
Depending on what type of fuel you burn will depend also on how often you should sweep and inspect your flue system serving your appliance. These are the industry recommended intervals for sweeping.
