Oil Boilers work similar to gas boilers with some slight differences. Firstly, oil is drawn from a storage tank via a pump into the burner inside the boiler. Secondly, The oil is pressurized to a high pressure and ejected from a nozzle that atomizes the fuel. The fuel is then ignited inside a combustion chamber and the exhaust gases are expelled through a heat exchanger, heating the water that lies in the water jacket around the heat exchanger, and finally out of the flue terminal into open air. The heated water is then pumped around the heating system and returns back to the boiler cooler than when it left to be reheated.
As a general rule you could count the number of radiators on your system allowing 1.5kw per radiator and then add 3kw for a hot water cylinder for example, however it is best to consult a heating engineer like myself to carry out a whole house survey. We will also look at the insulation properties of the home and take into consideration how much heat the property is likely to loose over a period of time and also consider any upgrades to the property you may be likely to undertake in the future.
Boilers should be replaced when you start to find issues with them. This could be anything from frequent breakdowns or odd smells, to low performance or leaks. It’s usually easier to get the work carried out in summer because boiler engineers are less busy at that time of the year. And you won’t be cold while your new boiler is being installed.
If you are looking for long term savings and high efficiency look no further than the Sapphire Boiler manufactured by EOGB. A link to their website can be found here https://sapphireboilers.co.uk/
If you have a red or orange light on the front of your burner and the burner isn’t firing it could be several of the following factors; Faulty control box, faulty solenoid/coil, dirty nozzle, dirty/faulty flame sensor, or perhaps a faulty fuel pump. You should give us a call and tell us you need a breakdown service so we can quickly diagnose the problem for you.
Short answer is yes BUT, there is several items that need to be changed and altered in order for your burner to run on the new fuel. A qualified engineer will also carry out a combustion analysis to ensure your burner is burning efficiently and cleanly.
The average cost of a complete boiler service including the pressure jet burner is £150 and includes an OFTEC servicing report for your records. Why not give us a call to discuss what appliance you have to ensure we can give you an accurate quote.
The cost of a new oil boiler typically ranges from £1,700-£7,000 with installation. You also need to consider fuel storage. You will need to have enough space to accommodate an oil tank on the property and make sure to keep it topped up to ensure the oil tank doesn’t run out. Should you run out of oil, this could cause water condensation and air to enter the fuel line resulting in a breakdown call out. As with gas boilers, all oil boilers can be either conventional, combi or system boilers.
